Tahsin Speaks...

By Swasti Jain

Remember all the times you visited those small boutiques where our mothers got their suits stitched? Close your eyes and try to imagine the floor. What do you see? Small pieces of clothes scattered all across, I assume? Well, that's what we call 'katran'! Katran- small scraps of unused cloth- are my building blocks, my ‘skin and cells’ that make me who I am. I am, none other than, Tahsin!

The students at Enactus VIPS-TC had a gleaming vision for the innocent katran that parted ways with the big stretches of fabric that often found themselves breathing in forms of glamorous outfits. They saw that this very katran needed a home as well, and hence, I was crafted into existence. Formal name- Project Tahsin, nicknamed- Tahsin, I take the shape of various products that are built with katran. Scrunchies- with their interesting variant that has ‘zippers’- for the free and flowy hair and pouches for keepsaking joys. Earrings to add that extra something to the already existing beauty and my favorite; bags- be it tote, flap, canvas or denim- to hold the love and articles that hands often fall short of!

Just like human beings are the culmination of all the people they have met, I am the culmination of all the fabrics I have met. I am really proud to have been born out of katran, especially in this age, where what is once cut out of the trail of cloth, is left to be sent to trash.

My grace often reflects those of the dedicated and inspiring women who are responsible for giving me different shapes and forms; piece by piece, with utmost intricacy and creativity. By giving me life, they not only get happiness and purpose but also the resources and financial independence they need to live a life as beautiful as their work.

I breathe in pieces

And bits and parts

Of cloth and love

That reaches hearts.

Colors and patches

And canvas of hands-

It’s art that blooms

Amongst scraps and strands.

Seeds of Renewal: A Journey towards Sustainability

By Harsh Kalkal

My beginnings were humble; I was born from the examination papers that had served their purpose and were destined to be forgotten. But fate had a different plan for me. The compassionate souls at Enactus VIPS-TC, with their vision for a greener tomorrow, transformed me from mere waste into something precious. I became a diary, not just any diary, but one that carried seeds within.

At first, I served the purpose of a normal dairy but with every word inscribed upon my pages, I grew closer to fulfilling my destiny.

The time came and my pages were filled, and my purpose seemed to have reached its end. Yet, it was not an end, but a transition to a new beginning. Buried beneath the soil, in the embrace of the earth, I waited. The seeds within me, once dormant, began to awaken, nurtured by the love and hope of those who believed in the power of renewal.

From these seeds sprouted new life, I watched, from beneath the soil, as my saplings reached towards the sky, aspiring to become trees that stand tall and proud. This cycle of life, from tree to paper to diary and back to tree, was a poignant reflection of sustainability.

This journey of mine, from a simple diary to a nurturer of life, is a reminder of the impact we can have on the world around us.

Enactus VIPS, cares about our environment, and through its project upcycle they contributed to a more sustainable future. Through project Upcycle, the team of Enactus VIPS-TC, has achieved a significant milestone in environmental conservation by recycling over 200 kg of paper, and have sold over 4000 sustainable products crafted from the recycled paper.

“From wood to sheet, a transformation unfolds,

To products renewed, with stories untold.

In the cycle of sustainability, we find our place,

From birth to rebirth, in nature's embrace.”
